Immersed in Enzymes for the Day
Franklin Rosenfeldt, MD, Cardiac Surgical Research Unit & Monash University

On that day, 15 April, I was attending a meeting of the International
Coenzyme Q10 Association at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles,
USA.

The Q10 association is a group of basic scientists and medical doctors who
meet every two years to exchange information about coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme
Q10 is an important constituent of every cell in the body and also a
therapeutic agent with a wide variety of uses.

Friday's meeting of over 200 participants lasted from 8.30am until 6.30pm.
This was followed by a meeting of a dozen or so investigators who are
conducting an international trial of coenzyme Q10 in the treatment of heart
failure. I attended this meeting, which finished at about 9pm thus ending a
long day packed with medical science.

That night, I reflected that April 15th had been a day of tremendous
exchange of information and of establishing friendships and cooperations
between scientists and doctors from Europe, the Americas, and Asia, a
memorable day!

High School Days

When I was in my last years at school, my favourite subjects were physics,
English, and French. My main hobbies were electronics, including amateur
radio, as well as music, especially piano playing. How would all of this
lead to a career?

In the end, I decided to study medicine and aim toward a career in medical
science. So that is how it worked out: medicine, surgery, cardiac surgery,
medical research and teaching.

Each year, I help to interview high school students, helping to determine
which ones will be admitted to the Monash University medical course, as I
was years ago.
