Running on Empty

Clare Richards, Meteorologist

by Angela Tsun

Remember Mechano sets, puzzles and toy robots that you might have played with as a kid? Well these were the favourite toys of Clare Richards, meteorologist at The Weather Channel.

Even though she doesn’t play with toy robots anymore, she’s still passionate about science and how things work. In ‘Running on Empty’ a TV series about Australia’s water crisis, Clare’s been involved in researching weather facts and the process of desalination
.

She made several comments on the facts of rainfall, recycled water and negatives of desalination in the TV series, which helped to bring about a more sensible outcome. The NSW government eventually scrapped plans to build a desalination plant and is now looking to other alternatives to solve Australia’s water issues.

Clare also holds the important role of ensuring that The Weather Channel’s data systems work properly each day and that all weather forecasts are correct.

Clare Richards not your average meteorologist.
