Media Surfing

Alex Zadnik, Surf forecaster

by Angela Tsun

Sand, salt and waves- does this remind you of summer holidays? Well, for Alex Zadnik, the beach is part of every day. If he is not forecasting conditions for Swellnet, he is at the beach catching the best barrels of the day. Of course, he knows exactly when the best sets will be!

Unlike many other jobs, every day at ‘the office’ is different. Today (April 12th) started off with a check of conditions at his local beaches, a quick surf then preparation of the national surf forecasts for the week- done in the comfort of his own home.

Alex has always been involved in communicating science in the media. He has provided weather forecasts for a number of channels on TV and has written for magazines, including a recent article on some big swell for a surfing magazine.
His passion for both surfing and science began in high school and has now become the basis of his existence. However, one day, he’d like to work for the government advising on climate change and greenhouse policy.
