“Taking weather to the people”

Richard Whitaker, Weather Educator

A first for Australian TV; ‘Weather School’, a funky new education series for secondary school students tailored around the Geography curriculum. It’s set to appear on TV screens mid-August, followed by a national road show, setting the standard for weather education in this country.

“Taking weather to the people has been my mission statement throughout my entire career, so to be part of this TV series is a dream come true!”, said Richard Whitaker, meteorologist at The Weather Channel. Richard’s role in this series is as a researcher, drawing from his extensive meteorological experience, as well as working alongside the CSIRO, AUSAID, State Emergency Services, Bureau of Meteorology and of course the Australian Geography School Teachers association.

On April 12th, he was busy collecting information on topics like the earth and its seasons, winds of Australia, and natural hazards, just some of the topics going to be covered.

When Richard was at high school, back in the early 1960’s, it was space missions that captivated his imagination and convinced him that science was the way of the future. Forty years later, he’s still convinced of the same thing!
