Protein Function

I was lucky to get a job cleaning glassware…

...at a lab. I am now a cell biologist by trade. Without that exposure, I doubt I would of considered a career in science research. That was about five years ago when I was studying first year uni. Now I'm taking on a project of my own. To me, undergraduate science was a joke. I don’t blame other students for not following a career in science after all that.

Back at school, it was science, science, and more science. I studied three science subjects for the HSC: physics; chemistry; and biology. In my area of science, you normally work within a research team headed by a senior researcher. I have been involved in one of these teams for a few years.

Recently, however, I have been moving in my own direction. I have taken on an honours student this year who works with me on my project. So gradually, I am forming my own research team.

"testing the function of a particular protein"

Today, my honours student presented some results which may have answered a 2-year query over the function of a particular protein we have been working on.

Science is my passion in life, but I also want monetary security. I currently work for a commercial organisation. If I was not in that sector of the industry, I doubt I would have stayed in the field.
