Combatting the Battle of the Bulge!

Written by Nicky Phillips

With the rising statistics of obesity in Australia, it is little wonder Dianne Woods, Executive Director of Nutrition Australia, was run off her feet during her day in science.
The aim of Nutrition Australia is to “provide scientifically based nutrition information to encourage all Australians to achieve optimal health through food variety and physical activity.”

Liaising with the community~

In light of this mission, on the 12th of April Dianne was doing just that.
Firstly she attended a meeting with colleagues on a program titled ‘Children in the Community.’ The purpose of the program: to encourage children’s health and development through healthy eating choices.

As a public health nutritionist, Dianne is involved in promoting good food practices to the wider population rather than consulting clients on individual dietary needs. As a result, part of every day for Dianne requires her to answer phone and email enquiries.

Promotion of healthy eating to everyday Australians~

The remainder of Dianne’s day was spent overseeing three projects from her current students. The first student is developing a program based on a Brekkie (breakfast) promotion for children. The second is piloting nutritional resources for teachers and the final student is producing an aged care newsletter for careers and nursing homes, etc., on good health practices for the elderly.

Hopefully, these three students will lead the way to reducing Australia expanding waistline.
