All Part of a Day’s Work
for this Science Communicator

Written by Nicky Phillips

Who would have imagined that when I called the CSIRO to find a scientist to interview for the WWDS, a Bachelor of Science (Communication) graduate -- like me -- would answer the phone? Rachel Fitzgerald, who also majored in psychology, has a position in the joint CSIRO and Victorian Government, Food Science Australia.

As a Brand Development Manager, Rachel spent much of Wednesday the 12th of April promoting a new magazine that is to be published by the Food Science Australia program. The bulletin titled Food Science & Nutrition is an informative guide written by food scientists.

The magazine is aimed at food processing companies, health organisations, and small businesses. The magazine will show different trends in the food market and factors driving consumer purchases, for e.g. at the moment people are interested in buying foods that are low in fat and sugar content and that have a low GI rating.

Rachel became involved with the CSIRO from the contacts she made through an internship required as part of her degree. Late last year, she moved across from CSIRO to join Food Science Australia to take on a more communication-focused role. In the future, Rachel wants to continue working with scientists as she finds the “atmosphere of research to be interesting and exciting.”
