ART
+ MATHS = SCIENCE?

From
artists to scientists is that such a leap to make?
In high school, I enjoyed science, liked maths, but most of
all loved art. When left high school, I followed the artists
path. After dabbling in the arts, the inner scientist within
drew me back to university and studied computers.
I was particularly interested in designing human friendly
technology. This area allowed me to study in neurophysiology
(the study of how the brain makes the body work), psychology,
linguistics and sociology as well as technology design and
various design methods and processes. Currently, I still enjoy
working across a number of different disciplines but now I
work from a perspective of IT design.
WHO
I WORK WITH
I love to see the success of my PhD Students. The highlight
of my day was a meeting with one of my PhD students. These
meetings are always, fun but today was special because his
whole research plan just fell into place, at last. He has
completed his empirical work and now needs to complete the
analysis and final write up for his PhD. It is always both
a delight and a relief when it is clear that a student has
what he or she needs to complete their doctoral work.
WHAT
I DO
Today was quite administrative, including several meetings;
reviewing a journal article; handling submissions to a doctoral
consortium that I am organising at a technology design conference
in Italy in July; and lots of assignment marking.
Much of the administrative work had to do with a conference
I am chairing. It is the annual conference for researchers
and practitioners in my field in Australia.
Other responsibilities include the day-to-day work that keeps
classes, labs, and research projects running in my university.
Currently, Dr Toni Robertson runs the Interaction Design and
Work Practice (IDWoP) Lab within the Faculty of IT at UTS.
