Geriatric
Psychiatry?

“A geriatrics psychiatrist!" a 3 year old Paula Saunders
responded after her grandmother asked her what she wanted
to be when she grew up. So really, she alway wanted to get
into psychology.
Paula attended the University
of Calgary, Canada, where she completed a Bachelor of
Psychology with honours. The practical implications of psychology
appealed to Paula. She gained some field experience working
for an insurance company that dealt with events such as bursting
mains.
Paula is now finishing up her PhD thesis on work-place bullying
and hopes to complete her Masters as well. Whilst conducting
her research, Paula also balances work as a tutor and lecturer.
Her plan, like many young academics, is to teach and earn
an income to support her way through a post-graduate degree.
On the 12th of April, Paula recalls the highlight of her day
as teaching in general. She enjoys interacting with students
and learning from their comments and contributions. Especially
rewarding is getting the students motivated by them god results
in their assessments! In the long term, all the teaching she
does adds to her experience in academia.
Nowadays, Paula is very excited by a ‘potential’ job. She
has been given a 'notification of consideration' for a position
outside the university working as a criminologist for the
government.
