Contributing science to TV

Alice Ford, Beyond Tomorrow (Discovery Channel)

Script writing is a regular part of my job as a TV producer on Beyond Tomorrow. It is the crunch time when all the planning, researching and shooting for a story must come together in a logical, informative and entertaining way that will appeal to an audience and various TV execs (not an easy task!) It is perhaps the most creative and challenging part of the process.

On 12th April, I was flat out finishing a script for a story on Beyond
Tomorrow
about the science and technology behind digital characters and effects in the movie industry. The high points were the times when the writing flowed, and I felt like I had filmed a lot of good stuff to tell an interesting and entertaining story . The low points were getting bogged down with figuring out what idea should come next - and starting to doubt my ideas - a writer's curse.

What I enjoy most about working on Beyond Tomorrow is communicating interesting science and innovative ideas to a broad audience. In an age of often mindless TV, it is great to be contributing real content. I also find it very fulfilling to be able to showcase the work of scientists who have been slaving away at projects for decades - we can give them acknowledgment and exposure for their ideas and technologies.

At high school, I was interested in both the arts and sciences. However, I only pursued arts subjects at university. Happily, my TV career has been mainly focussed around science themes - from wildlife films, to environmental issue programs, kid's science programs, and now Beyond Tomorrow. Constantly learning new things has made my career a very interesting and stimulating one.
