My 2 Bob's Worth

Jason Major

The email box is overflowing, notes all over my desk and information packs stacked to the ceiling - not very sciency.

But I just got back from six days at the Sydney Show where I talked to people about biotechnology, mostly explaining to school students (some as young as five) about DNA and how scientists use it.

You would be amazed how you can explain complex science such as DNA and genetics to a five-year-old, especially when they can actually see what it really looks like - snot, gooby, slime and other such descriptions get used.

I have now done the 5 million emails - mostly junk, sent off some information to a student to help with his assignment on genetically modified crops - his main concern was that GM crops were going to get out of control.

My other enquiry was from an artist-in-residence wanting information on the various forms of genetic technologies and to find out more about genetically modified goats that can produce spider silk in their milk, cactus growing human hair and cloned cows with extra genes for milk protein. She is getting creative in her depictions of biotechnology

Where am I am going to next....Science teachers conference in Tasmania. Ah lovely. I had better start developing the workshop I have to give the teachers on stem cells. I'll do that later today, though.

Now I have to do accounts stuff...grumble, $#^*& ... hate doing accounts.
