Information
Technology = NOT ‘challenge-free’!
Surya Prasad, Bahrain Petroleum
Company, Bahrain
I am getting everything that I have ever wanted!
Challenges, challenges and more challenges.
I come from a family with a well-established business background.
However, their line of work does not provide them with enough
challenges that they can benefit from. I wanted to get into
a field which was highly professional,
aggressive, value-driven and growth-oriented.
I wanted to accept challenges with a die-hard attitude and
to troubleshoot problems with creative
solutions. I eventually entered the field
of Information Technology and am getting everything that I
ever wanted.
Oil Industry
I work as an IT system analyst for BAPCO (Bahrain Petroleum
Company), one of the leading refineries in the Middle East.
We deal with the oil industry including exploration and prospects
for oil, drilling, production, refining, distribution and
export of petroleum products, crude oil and natural gas. About
95% of our refined products are exported to our prime customers
based in the Middle East, India, the Far East, South-East
Asia and Africa.
On the 12th of April, as part of an internal audit
that is currently taking place in our company, the management
sent out an immediate request for audit reports from the contracts,
engineering and maintenance departments. The request came
at around 3:30pm (our usual time to leave office) and we
were not really sure of exactly what was required of us by
the management.
The whole department started working on these reports and
after many trials we managed to produce the reports which
were to be submitted to the auditing team on the morning of
April 13th. The management then sent out its appreciation
for all our efforts in completing the reports within such
short notice.
Never-ending demands
As part of the IT department, the demand for computer system
requirements is never-ending and we are always on our toes
to meet such user demands. We have over 3000 employees working
round the clock throughout the week. My duties include analysis,
design, development, implementation and support i.e., I am
involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle.
My team members and I need to always
be on alert to meet the deadlines of any project.
Of course, as with any profession, I am always faced with
problems from users, the management and colleagues. But then
again, this is all part of the challenge that comes with the
industry!
