Interview with Meagan McLachlan

Q.1. What area of science do you study in University of New South Wales?

I study Science Communication and my major is pharmacology.

Q.2 What are the differences of being in 1st year and 2nd year in UNSW?

Well… 1st year was struggle because anything that is juicy applies later. Mainly we studied math, chemistry and etc. Basically 1st year will give you common knowledge for future years.

Q.3 Why did you choose to study Science Communication?

Because in high school, I enjoyed medicine side of biology rather that chemistry. I also had a role model who was my friend’s mum and she studied pharmacology in university.

Q.4 What do you want to achieve in future years?

I want to get a job in Pharmaceutical Company:
- Marketing
- Public Relation
- Team Building.

Q.5 Currently, what are you learning in Science Communication?

Basically, I’m learning how the body operates on a micro, micro level. For example, the metabolism pathways from Glucose break down which create ATP, and exactly how the electrical signals in the body produce heart beat.

Also, I study the methods of teaching; the how and the why we store information in our minds.

Q.6 What are your likes and dislikes?

LIKES .......................................DISLIKES

Going out with friends .................Chemistry

Friends ......................................Rudeness

Medical course ...........................Maths
without the
blood & guts

Q.7 Which high school did you attend? Was it a co-ed school?

I went to Barker College and it’s a co-ed school from Year 10 to 12.

Q.8 In Year 11 and Year 12, which subjects did you choose to study?

Math [dislike], Chemistry [dislike], Biology [Love], PDHPE [Love], Art [Love] and English [hate].

Q.9 Are you allowed to walk in/out whenever you like during a lecture/tutorial?

Lectures are not compulsory so people can come and go as they please but tutorial roll is marked and usually 80% of attendances are needed to pass.

Q.10 What kind of assignments/exams do you get? Do you stress a lot?

1st year: Exams – Multiple Choice and short answers

Assignments – Computer Questions, essays, group assignments, and journal articles

2nd year: journal articles, videos, and etc.

It depends on how much stress you want to put on yourself; independent learning is the way, if you want to learn and pass; but you must put extra effort in outside university.

Yes, I do get stressed a lot!!! But if you don’t, you are not motivated to do any work.
